Fremont City Council members can take another step toward an urban viaduct to provide grade separation between U.S. Highway 30 and Burlington Northern & Santa Fe and Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad tracks.

"It basically ties down the funding for the project and gets us in the pool for future funding when on the priority list to be funded," said Derril Marshall, acting city administrator. "It's another step in the process. (The resolution) applies for federal funds and the city agrees to pay an estimated $2.6 million with a total project cost of about $9 million. This gives the city's intention to pay their share of the project."

That approximately $2.6 million will pay for the design of the viaduct, the acquisition of right of way property and project supervision.

Tonight's meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of the municipal building, 400 E. Military Ave. It is preceded by a study session at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public. A grade separation study in 2004 looked at both Military Avenue and 23rd Street, but determined 23rd Street roughly between about 400 to 500 feet east of Somers Avenue west to Colorado would provide the biggest benefit.

"The object is to provide grade separation to get vehicular and emergency traffic to the west side of the city more efficiently," said Derril Marshall, acting city administrator. "There are times when there are traffic delays when Burlington has to wait for clearance for Union Pacific to cross their tracks."

At-grade crossings at Linden and Somers avenues will be closed and the plans also call for pedestrian/bike underpasses at Linden and Somers, he said.

"The time frame depends on when the federal funding becomes available," Marshall said. "The last I heard, we were talking three to five years."

Many of us grew up celebrating the holidays just the same as Addie did. It is like a looking glass to the past. Also the interactions between Jason Robards and Mildred Natwick are superb acting. I never tire of watching any of the movies. It just seems like I am watching a girl from my past involved in the various epsides.

The first time I saw ALL FOUR of the movies on TV, I knew I had seen something very special. I STILL feel that way.
