BLAIR n The Midland Lutheran College track and field team opened its outdoor season strong Saturday in the Neil Moore Classic at Dana College.
Despite only one week of practice over the last three weeks due to spring break, the MLC men won the four-team meet with 173.5 points. The Warriors placed first in five different events. Dana College finished in second with 162 points.
In the women’s competition, Grand View College finished first with 124 points. MLC was second with 114 and Creighton finished third with 64.
“This was a situation where we were competing against teams that had nearly the same numbers that we did and it allowed us to compete at a high level,” Midland coach Jim McMahon said.
Fremont native Andrew Jacob placed first for MLC with a time of 1:58.8 in the 800. He then teamed up with Ryan Rogers, Trino Nuno and David Ernesti to finish first in the 3,200-meter relay with a meet record time of 8:13.8.
MLC finished 1-2 in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Eric Risinger won the 110 hurdles in 15.73 and Rogers won the 400 hurdles in 57.89. Alan Losbog was second in the 400 hurdles in 58.15.
“The 400 hurdles was an exceptional race for us,” McMahon said. “Both of our competitors are first year hurdles. This was Rogers’ first hurdles race that he has ran in his life... Losbog (a freshman from Hawaii) had never competed in the 400 before n he ran the 300 in high school. For those kids to do that was outstanding.”
Levi Wettlaufer led the Warriors in their 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault. He cleared 14-0 to win the event. Brad Hall placed first for MLC in the high jump, clearing 6-5.
Kami Wettlaufer led the Lady Warriors with first place finishes in the pole vault and javelin. She cleared 10-0 in the pole vault and threw 131-6 in the javelin. Wettlaufer’s mark in the javelin qualified her for the national meet.
“Our best single performance was Kami Wettlaufer in the javelin,” McMahon said. “She earned an automatic national qualifying mark in her first meet of the season, last year she didn’t qualify until nearly two-thirds of the way into the season.”
Jana Brewer was first for MLC in the high jump at 5-2. Her teammate Sydney Cooksley finished second at 5-0.
Due to poor weather conditions, the women’s discus and hammer throw were canceled along with the men’s shot put and discus. According to McMahon, MLC was poised to score high in the women’s events that were canceled.
