As one might expect from a game full of talented senior girls, the Warrior Basketball Classic went down to the wire on Saturday.

The White team came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to clip the Dark Team 80-78.

The inside game brought the White team charging back in the second half. White MVP Jenny Svoboda of Howells scored nine of her 19 points in the final 20 minutes.

She hit two free throws that tied it at 76 with 2:41 left. She hit foul shot that gave the White a 79-78 lead.

As the White Team got rolling offensively, shooting 50 percent from the field in the second half, coach Greg Jahde was most pleased with the team's defense in the second half.

"I think the main thing we wanted to point out was our defense," Jahde said. "We didn't feel like we played very good defense in the first half. In the second half, we played a lot better and the girls helped each other out and played as a team. In the second half, our defense helped out our offense as well."

The Dark Team used its range from the perimeter to pull out to an early lead in the game. The Dark team went 4-of-10 from behind the three-point line in the first half. Leading 33-30 with 3:28 left in the half, Hannah Feller drained a three to extend the Dark lead to 36-30. Feller, from Wisner-Pilger, scored 10 points in the game.

With less than a minute left, Fremont Bergan senior Laura Wilmes hit another for a 43-52 lead. Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the first half.

"The girls really came out and pushed the ball up the floor and shot the ball extremely well," said Dark Team coach Bo Krivohlavek. "It makes the game pretty easy when you shoot well. The nice thing was that we spread the wealth a little bit. No one kid really stood out for us and we scored a lot of points in the first half."

The Dark Team struggled on the offensive side of the ball in the second half, shooting 11-of-34 from the field in the half. But the Darks got a spark from MVP Chelsea Rew.

The Yutan native scored 14 points in the game. She hit a jumper from the elbow with five minutes left in the game to extend the Darks lead to 75-72.

Rew said the all-star event was a great experience.

"It was a really big honor to win the MVP," Rew said. "I wasn't really expecting to get it, so it was a nice surprise."

Five players scored in double figures in the game for the White team. Cara Anderson of Fort Calhoun had 15.
