Gov. Dave Heineman is seeking qualified candidates to represent District 2 residents on the Nebraska Board of Education.

Ann Mactier resigned her position, effective June 6. She had served on the board since 1996. The governor will appoint a new board member to complete the term, which runs through 2008.

To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the qualifications set out for board of education members in state statute. Those not eligible for consideration include anyone actively involved in the teaching profession, as well as current state officers and members of other boards and commissions, unless the role of the board is limited to an advisory capacity.

Applicants must have lived within the boundaries of District 2 for at least six months. The district includes Cass, Saunders, and Washington counties, as well as portions of Douglas and Sarpy counties. Detailed maps of the district and its boundaries are available on the governor's Web site at www.gov.state.ne.us. Heineman also may choose to seek out additional qualified candidates.

Individuals interested in the position should send a cover letter and resume, along with a completed application form to Peggy King in the governor's office, at P.O. Box 94848, Lincoln, NE 68509. The application form can be found on the governor's Web site or requested by calling the governor's Office. Applications will be accepted through the end of the day on June 25.

The names of those submitting formal applications will be made public. Anyone with questions about the position may call the governor's office at (402) 471-2244.
