A Fremont teenager was sentenced to prison Tuesday in Dodge County Court less than a month after his

22-year-old brother was sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.

Cory Blanchard, 18, pleaded no contest to attempted third-degree assault of an officer, a Class I misdemeanor. He was sentenced to two concurrent one-year prison sentences for that charge and a previous conviction for third-degree assault.

Blanchard was arrested June 3 after Fremont Police were called to a fight. While two officers were at a window talking to a female in the home, Blanchard is accused of attempting to drop kick the officers.

His brother, Joshua Blanchard, was sentenced June 2 to seven to 12 years in prison for use of a weapon to commit a felony, a Class III felony.

“I just don’t want to end up like my brother,” Cory Blanchard said. “I just want to raise my daughter better than I was raised.”

Judge Kenneth Vampola said he doesn’t let people hide behind their children, but that Cory Blanchard’s unborn child won’t know he was in court or prison unless he continued a criminal lifestyle.

“The only apology you will ever have to give is to your child because you weren’t there to be a father,” Vampola said. “Some day you’ll either be a father or be apologizing for not being a father because you didn’t learn from this experience.”

Vampola wished Cory Blanchard luck as he was led out of the courtroom.
