I see we have another school bond before us. Now I know the people of Fremont are not dumb. We just had our house assessment increased $15,000 this spring.
Let me see - who really is paying for this so called repairs and improvements to our schools? Yep, we are. And why are the schools over populated? Maybe because of all the illegals who live in our community.
We are way over taxed. Does anybody else feel the same?

Whether the bond issue fails or passes, your real estate taxes are going up anyway due to the FPS increases for salary, transportation, heating, cooling, supplies, and the list goes on and on and on.asc

UHHH.....HELLO! We've been way over taxed since before the Hispanic community moved in. Wake up and quit blaming anyone who isn't white for taxes going up.Teachers Retire
Aug 22, 2008 12:49 PM
When they let all the teachers retire at 55 with full benefits, what can you expect; taxes, taxes, and more taxes. And then a lot of them come right back after retirement and work for FPS again and double dip!cher

You really believe our schools are overpopulated because "all the illegals" in our community? Do you even know how many illegals are in Fremont or are you just assuming that anyone who is Hispanic is illegal?Yes Cher...I know
Aug 22, 2008 3:06 PM
Yes, Cher,I know because I recently talked to a person who has access to those kind of figures. At Fremont Senior High (grades 9-12)there are between 150-160 Hispanic students. And, yes, Cher that is a load on the FSH budget...what do they figure like about $5,000. per student per year to educate kids now?
And Cher, the above figures do NOT include the Hispanics in K to 8th grade.
Do you have those figures....since you seem to think you are so informed on this issue?
Thanks for listening, adios!!

and to yes cher.....how would you know if the student's parents are illegal? If they have a green card or not is not in the student's cumulative file.
I bet the majorit of the Hispanic students were born here--which makes them CITIZENS....
do you have a problem with a legal CITIZEN?

The school bond will pass again with flying colors because most of you complainers about taxes do just that---COMPLAIN---that's all. Very few of you bother to register to vote or bother to go vote. See you all in the new 5th grade school by the waterpark!none the less
Aug 24, 2008 7:21 PM
None the less, schools need improvements, and if you are willing to let the educational system of Fremont suffer because of your stubborn attitudes on an issue you cannot control (no you cannot control it!), then you will not have teachers working here. The community has to show care in education to keep quality educators.cher

To Yes Cher...I Know:"Do you have those figures....since you seem to think you are so informed on this issue?"
Did I say I was so informed on this issue? No, I don't think I did! I asked a simple question. Which, by the way, you did not answer!! You give numbers on the amount of Hispanics in the schools. No mention of illegals. Hmmm, maybe you're not so informed, huh? I think you should back up your figures.

You're not making sense; taxpayers in Fremont have been more than generous the past years with paying more real estate taxes for bond issues and the public schools; it's time to say NO.parent

My family lived in Fremont most of my life but we were sent to schools outside of town because of the poor education quality as well as the overpopulation issues. I am not of hispanic race either. I now live in Fremont but am chosing to send my children to Bergan schools because they are not overpopulated and the education is of much better quality than Fremont Public Schools. Regardless, taxes will always increase, but rather than let your children suffer, give them the better educational choice whether that is Bergan or a school out of town. Just my opinion.EE

What the kids dont deserve a good quality school?? Well have the schools all get runned down and then everyone will blame the Illegals for that too...give it a rest!Proud FPS parent

to: parent. I find it curious that you have not attended FPS and you don't send your kids there...but yet you seems to know all about the quality of education. I have had a graduate of Bergan and one of Fremont. Both got a good education but the opportunities for my child at Fremont were greater. While I appreciate that Bergan is a good school -- i don't think you are exactly in a position to judge.
As a former Bergan parent -- there is nothing worse that an arrogant Bergan parent that for some reason has to justify thier choice by putting down FPS.

I am not putting down FPS, i just know from other kids that went there and opted out due to lack of teacher student communication. My youngest brother was told to figure it out on his own when he went in early for help with his homework and he was a good student too. And I have been to FPS for a year and a half and did not care for it. Bergan I feel has better oportunities due to its stronger educational values and having the ability for all kids to play sports not just the ones that their parents have money to burn. How many of the kids from FPS have to go to the learning center and how many go there from Bergan? There is a large difference. But if you are complaining of the overpopulation and such then why defend fps? I am a registered voter and I vote on those issues. I still vote to better FPS, i pay the same taxes, I dont want to see that system fail. I hope it gets better but for the time being, I chose bergan. All children deserve a great education, as long as they are us citizens that is. If not then they need to take the proper steps to become one. That is all i am saying. To parent

Is English taught at Bergan? Writing, spelling, punctuation?FORMER STUDENT

To all those to support FPS, I have to tell you my story... I moved here from a very small school where I was on Student Council, played sports and was popular. I knew a few kids but not many. I was picked on EVERY... yes I said EVERY day in High School, only to have them tell my mom that maybe I should transfer to the Learning Center. This is what I did and I graduated and made it in the real world. So I feel I will also send my children to another school district such as Bergan or DC West in Valley, both of which I feel have better control on the daily harassment of kids and curb the behavior. So you PROUD PARENT be PROUD of a school that lets behavior like this go on daily. I just hope it doesn't happen to your children.
Middle Schoolers
Aug 27, 2008 8:04 AM
Even worse than how kids are treated at the high school, is the atmosphere at the middle school - unless you're one of the wealthier, popular kids, it can be hard going to school there everyday. Of course these kids are always the teachers' pets & most have no idea how these kids treat the other students. It's really not a good experience for these kids at the middle school. Another reason why I believe that the 5th-graders need to stay where they are in their neighborhood schools. Putting huge amounts of preteens together in a huge school has been a failed social experiment.FHS Graduate
Aug 27, 2008 12:29 PM
I am a Fremont High Graduate. I completed K-12 at FPS. I must tell you that I am looking at a different school for my children because FPS has a terrible system. The student/teacher ratio is WAY to high. The GPA's aren't high enough compared to other schools. Once you get to high school, if you are picked on, well, lets just say you might as well get used to it, because the majority of the teachers just don't care and will just walk by and let things happen. If you complain, you get in trouble and if you try to defend yourself, you get expelled. That is how FHS works and it has worked that way for a while. So, needless to say, I will either take my kids to Bergan or find a new community, because the education of my children should not be sub-par!As far as our taxes, Nebraska is one of the highest taxed states in the nation. That is not an opinion, it is a fact, so get used to the high taxes that we pay, because I highly doubt that it is going to change anytime soon. The only thing I can suggest is to contact your Congressman and/or Senator and ask them to fix our state.

My kids have gone to both Bergan and FPS. Bullying, teachers turning a blind eye, preferential treatment for the rich kids, etc. - everything that goes on at Fremont, goes on at Bergan too. We've experienced it firsthand. Don't kid yourself that the "grass is greener". All schools have problems.Doug

We were told the old Jr High on Main St was beyond repair...yet it now houses School Admin Staff in newly-remodeled offices. The Jr High bldg on Broad was beyond repair...yet it now houses Metro Tech in newly-remodeled rooms and offices. We were told Memorial Pool was beyond repair...who knows?...it was demolished quicker than you can blink because the YMCA needed that ground for their new ice rink. Would someone please tell me why I should jump on this latest bond bandwagon?
