Leonard L. Schutt, 77, of Buffalo, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Colonial Springs Health Care Center in Buffalo.
He was born April 27, 1931, in Brule. He attended school in North Bend and worked on the family dairy farm until he entered the U.S. Air Force in July 1951. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He married Ruth Grimes on June 29, 1952. He later was stationed in Lincoln. After living in several towns in Nebraska, they moved to Springfield, Mo., in 1970 where their egg processing careers began. In 1981, they moved to Buffalo where they opened L & R Egg Company and supplied eggs to Consumers Markets, Associated Wholesale Grocers and other institutional accounts. In 1991, he built a 120,000-layer facility and started raising black Angus cattle on the farm near Elkland where he continued to work as much as he could until his death.
Survivors include: a son, Gene (and wife, Alesia) of Elkland; four daughters, Patricia and Joyce, both of Elkland, and Sharon and Ann (and husband, Brad), all of Springfield; three brothers, Marvin Schutt of Ames, Larry Schutt of Fremont and Raymond Schutt (and companion, Jeanie Kracl) of Schuyler; two sisters, Evelyn (and husband, Herbert) Wesch and Dorothy (and husband, Dale) Hosch of Ames; a brother-in-law, Bryan (and wife, Elizabeth) Grimes of Tyler, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, a sister and other family members.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Montgomery-Viets Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Meyer officiating. Burial with military honors was in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.
