GRAND ISLAND - Fremont High’s McKayla Anderson earned a second-place medal Friday at the Grand Island Invitational.

Anderson shot a 76 at Jack Rabbit Run Golf Course, just one stroke behind meet medalist Nicole Mooberry of Norfolk.

"McKayla played a solid round of golf today. She likes this golf course," Fremont golf coach Maggie Peters said. "We evaluated McKayla’s stats after she played at Wilderness on Tuesday and we decided her game plan was to go for the pin, nothing should be left short.

"Her approach shots were right on. She hit 11 out of 18 greens in regulation."

The Tigers placed third out of 17 teams with a score of 358. Beatrice and Norfolk tied at 346 and entered a playoff which went one extra hole as Beatrice was victorious.

Sophie Peters took home a 10-place medal for Fremont, shooting an 86.

"Sophie is such a strong player off the tee which leaves her with that hard 50- to 100-yard shot into the par 4’s and this is where she is struggling," coach Peters said. "But as she practices this week, I think she can get her confidence back in her short game and start putting down a few more pars on the scorecard."

Mariel Groh shot a 93 while Claire Hulett and Bayley Beacher finished with scores of 103 and 108, respectively, for FHS.

The Tigers play in the Lincoln Southeast Invitational on Tuesday at Holmes Golf Course and will be home for a dual on Friday against Omaha Westside.
