Post details: Think about those comments

01:38:18 pm, by Tracy BUFFINGTON

As the 2008 campaign season was drawing to a close, the number of negative, attack advertisements from a host of candidates increased. There are plenty of people -- myself included -- who are turned off by these types of advertising. I can’t speak for others, but I find them to be hateful and full of half truths.

I’m confused by those who cry foul about this type of advertising, but have no problem using the same attack mentality on Web comments and letters to the editor. You only need to browse through comments on this Web site to see examples that are far worse than any political campaign sent out.

Sure, we will continue to post comments that included negativity. We also will continue to reject comments that appear to be attacks on others who make comments. But trying thinking about this before typing: Would I say that to my mother? If not, maybe the comment shouldn’t be made.

continue to reject comments that appear to be attacks on others who make comments? Do you actually read some of the posts before you approve them? I see a few people who do attacking on a daily basis (Fremonter, Tired of Morons). The name calling of these two posters is continuous and, as I see it, attacks on other posters to be called stupid, morons, idiots and whatever else these folks can come up with.

Let freedom of speech prevail. If someone is acting out of line then let that person be subject to views. Fremont has serious problems all because of basically one person..

I agree with Whatever's comment. Even though the code of conduct to leaving comments on articles says to not attack others, there are a few (Fremonter and Tired of Morons are the worst) that comment regularly and it seems all they do is attach other's comments and calling names. Once their comments quit appearing, I will believe the posts are actually looked at.

Freedom of speech--bull. The press continues to pursue a "freedom of slander" campaign against Gov. Palin everytime it publishes a story based on "anonymous sources." What in the world has happened to professional journalism and journalists? If the 1st Amendment is under attack, the attack is from the so-called "press" that abuses its 1st Amendment power by printing these anonymous slurs, thereby giving "credibility" to any lie some such "source" wants published. What difference is there between a lie from a government or Nazi propagandist and a lie from some liberally biased publisher? How does the reader know that there is a "source?" That the "source" is credible and unbiased? Identify your sources mister publisher or don't print your so-called "news story." Be neutral and objective like the press is supposed to be.

I agree with Whatever. There are some, and yes it is mainly "Fremonter". Tired of Morons can make some mean comments, but he has nothing on Fremonter who never say's anything positive at all and attacks anyone who disagree's with him in any way. I have commented on several occasions that he should be banned from making comments and I feel a lot of people would agree with me. In addition I agree with 1st amend?... Annonymous comments do not apply to the first ammendment.

While of course, we, as a country, are founded upon free speech and other "inalienable rights", why doesn't everyone just chill. The Tired of Morons guy has an anger issue. I was told recently at a seminar, that when young people OR adults act out rudely, they are either hungry, angry, lonely, tired, or scared. Or a combination there of. Bet he's a combination, huh?

Register Supporter: I hope Charlie Janssen does not cheat us like he has cheated others that counted on him.
sue: This isn't the first time i've seen Charlie drinkin' it up at the bars here in town.

Need I go on?

I will try to take Mr. Buffington's suggestions to heart, but with one caveat: I will only post comments that I'd be willing to say to my mother-in-law, but not to my mother. If everyone did that, there'd be no posts. At all.

I'll also try to limit my insults to people in general, rather than in-duh-viduals. But that'll be hard. Because I'm still Tired of Morons. Respectfully.

Omahan said 1 thing I agree with. If someone disagrees with what I, or fremonter, or anyone else says, well: "then let that person be subject to views". If I can dish it out, I should be able to take it.

But Omahan also said: "Fremont has serious problems all because of basically one person.." Is he referring to fremonter? Me? Skip? Bob Warner? Charlie Janssen? Charile Diers? Tracy Buffington? My mother-in-law?
Please be more specific so we can either mock you or defend the person of whom you slander.

Seriously, I am all for free speech, but it almost seems this paper does injustice by allowing comments. FREMONTER is a prime example, and I do not know why he/she claims to be a FREMONTER. He/She hates everything about any story in this paper about FREMONT...sheesh, move away already…make a choice, maybe there is a better place for FREMONTER to live. Everyone to him/her is an idiot, dumb or moronic. These comments are distracting and hateful and give voice to someone who doesn’t have a clue in the world. In my opinion comments on this site (albeit idiotic to FREMONTER) should just go away all together. I've cancelled my subscription, but when I read online these comments are a total distraction. My bad for reading them at all and giving the time of day to those that negatively write them.

Bobo- it seems some comments here have hit a nerve. Your post with all the quotes is a bit different than what I am talking about. Those quotes you posted show people expressing their frustrations at city officials, politicians and the status quo. What many are tired of with your posts and those of Fremonter are the attacks on others on the board. If someone does not agree with your point of view they are a moron, uneducated, an idiot or some other name you come up with. This was the point I was making, that according to the blog by Mr. Buffington that comments attacking others that post on these boards were not approved. Many of your posts and those of Fremonter show this is not always the fact.
I think people should feel free to express their discontent with their city officials and representatives, but the personal attacks on others on the board are just getting old.
And for those who like to use the boards to complain about the Fremont Tribune, it takes a lot of nerve to take advantage of the FREE service they offer you, that they pay for I may add, and then in the next breath criticize it. It must not be that bad if you keep coming back. In these hard times it is nice to know the Tribune is available even if I can not afford a subscription.
Nice Bobo said:11/18/08 at 23:03
I hereby repent. I will no longer be Tired of Morons, but tolerant of them. Hence, Nice Bobo. I feel bad that I've been misunderstood. My posts, while I admit could be somewhat harsh, were only intended to challenge; to stimulate people to lift themselves out of the throes of what in the past I might have referred to as "hillbilly-ness". Did I succeed? I don't know. But if just one person was saved, then it was worth it.
But Nice Bobo will from now on, God (or whomever your higher power might be) willing, will be, well,...Nice.
But would we not all be better served if we also refrained from the personal name-calling of our public servants? They, like you and I, are human beings. Are they not therefore worthy of the same courtesy that we as private citizens demand of each other? If not more? Is it not customary to refer to a government official, such as a mayor, as "honorable"? I respectfully contend that if we are to progress as a community, society and planet all must practice what is commonly known as the Golden Rule.

It's clear how you pick and choose what you deem appropriate to run for all letters/blogs. How amusing to read the recent stories on local business owners that you are obviously in the process of trying to get their adversiting dollars back. How pitiful. Please give the community more credit that this.
