Post details: This study is worth the cost
Fremont City Council members on Tuesday will discuss the approval of a study about data centers. While paying for studies, to some, seems to be a waste of funds, this will be money well spent.
Think about it. It could cost $3 million to $5 million to upgrade the city’s technology infrastructure to even have a chance to land a data center. It seems logical to spend between 1 percent and 2 percent of that total -- $50,000 to $100,000 -- to determine if we would be competitive with other markets. About half of that money would come from the state through Community Development Block Grant funds.
There is a lot of buzz about data centers in economic development circles these days. Having an objective, independent look at what Fremont could offer is an essential step before moving forward.
Comments:
We are to slow to pull the trigger, do we truly want nothing but glorified telemarketing in this town?
DEFINITION: A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression) and security devices.
So you are saying this is just an empty building with water sprinklers and generators in the event the power goes off?
I am not sure how many jobs that would create? One employee to unlock the door? It seems there was great competition for the data center being built somewhere by Google? in Omaha; but I can't see the economic boom from a bunch of computers in a building?
Manufacturing jobs I understand, computer jobs I don't, although i play a mean game of solitare.
I was in school 30 some years ago -too expensive too, old fashioned too, upity, too boring.
What we need are a Kohls and Target, and stores like that so we have a larger shopping base and we would stay here and surrounding areas would shop here also
thank you
