Post details: This study is worth the cost

01:02:19 pm, by Tracy BUFFINGTON

Fremont City Council members on Tuesday will discuss the approval of a study about data centers. While paying for studies, to some, seems to be a waste of funds, this will be money well spent.
Think about it. It could cost $3 million to $5 million to upgrade the city’s technology infrastructure to even have a chance to land a data center. It seems logical to spend between 1 percent and 2 percent of that total -- $50,000 to $100,000 -- to determine if we would be competitive with other markets. About half of that money would come from the state through Community Development Block Grant funds.
There is a lot of buzz about data centers in economic development circles these days. Having an objective, independent look at what Fremont could offer is an essential step before moving forward.

the data center boat has left the dock.

We are to slow to pull the trigger, do we truly want nothing but glorified telemarketing in this town?

Village Idiot: Please see this definition of a data center. It's not for telemarketing companies. This is something the city of Fremont could greatly benefit from. We must continually upgrade our city infrastructure in a fast growing technological society.
DEFINITION: A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression) and security devices.

Thanks for the explanation, Get Informed. We had ink wells in desks when i went to school.

So you are saying this is just an empty building with water sprinklers and generators in the event the power goes off?

I am not sure how many jobs that would create? One employee to unlock the door? It seems there was great competition for the data center being built somewhere by Google? in Omaha; but I can't see the economic boom from a bunch of computers in a building?

Manufacturing jobs I understand, computer jobs I don't, although i play a mean game of solitare.

What is so funny is we are about 20 years behind cities the same size as we are such as Columbus, Grand Island , Kearney and etc. We haven't done anything to keep up with these cities in the last 50 years why now are we going to try to bring in new buinsness. It will just get voted down like the other buisness's that wanted to come here. Just trying to built a four lane on broad street so we could move the traffic faster drew protests like mad. Go to Norfolk and you see many four lane roads and the traffic moves at a good pace. Save your money--the big shots in Fremont are using the old excuse that we are to close to Omaha to expand anything. So as my dad used to tell me. "Save your breath to cool down your soup". because that is as far as your going to get. If we had business's come into Fremont and people in Fremont could stay here and work instead of driving to Omaha they would buy here. But when they drive to Omaha to work naturally they are going to buy there. There aren't the store's here to buy anything.

If building data centers was profitable, someone would be doing it and knocking on Fremont's door. They're not! If building water parks was profitable someone would have done it! Why must those of us who will never use it have to pay? Fremont needs to create term limits on local government at all levels - mayor, city council, business director, etc etc. Our town is stuck in a rut because of consistant poor leadership in positions of power that require no results to stay. Private business workers have motivation to be successful. Where is the motivation for a worker who doesn't have to worry about losing their job no matter how poor they work. Government jobs are too secure which removes the motivation to give an effort and try hard.

If we had any place in this stupid town except a Walmart to shop in we wouldn't have to go to Omaha to shop. and as far as the downtown goes its exactly the same as it was when
I was in school 30 some years ago -too expensive too, old fashioned too, upity, too boring.
What we need are a Kohls and Target, and stores like that so we have a larger shopping base and we would stay here and surrounding areas would shop here also
thank you

if they had done this 20 years ago, it would have cost a lot less and fremont would have been alot better off today.
